Founded on June 24, 1478, with the original name of El Real de las Tres Palmas, the city enthusiastically celebrates the anniversary of its birth every summer. The extensive program of cultural activities and open-air performances in the historic surroundings of Vegueta is rounded out every night of San Juan, the eve of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s birthday, with a night of spectacular fireworks on Las Canteras Beach. Thousands of citizens attend this event and it is a major attraction for tourists visiting the city on that date.
